Religious freedom was central to the development of some colonies and not others because some colonies were ruled by other countries. If your colony was owned by a country that believed and followed a certain religion, then your colony had to follow it too. Unless you broke away from your colony you had to follow that religion. Religious freedom was denied in some colonies because you had a ruler that made you follow a religion. Other people claimed land and made there own colonies and followed their own religion, also known as separatists.
